HITU Syllabus

Getting Started

The following material is designed to answer any questions you might have regarding what you need to complete and when you need to have it completed. Always use your IUT MCG as your primary reference. Remember all classes and tests must be completed NLT the day prior to the event listed. Since briefs are often scheduled before the testing center opens, you should not plan to complete a prerequisite test on the day of the flight/simulator event that it must precede. If you do not have the class or test complete on time, an out-of-module situation exists and your training will be delayed unnecessarily. Don't let this happen.

  1. Ensure current up-chit and AvPHYS/Swims qual before starting to fly.
  2. Check-in/Ground School (2 weeks): This is fairly self-paced to allow you to take care of any unfinished business you may have with regard to moving in/getting settled. C2001, C2002, and C2003 can be scheduled during this period. The following events must be completed prior to the C4001 brief:
    1. All TH-57 B/C Systems and Aerodynamics Interactive Courseware (ICW) lessons and review lectures. All ICW lessons must be completed prior to taking the Systems and Aerodynamics exams. See Flight Support/Academic Schedule.
    2. Course Rules Class - See Flight Support / Academic Schedule. Note: there is a separate class for HT IP's and IUT's.
    3. Safety Lecture. This is offered weekly and is designed to provide information that is most beneficial before you begin flying. Plan to attend the first class available. (See the Flight Support/Academic Schedule).
    4. TH-57 B/C Systems examination - See Testing Center for hours.
    5. Aerodynamics examination - See Testing Center for hours.
    6. FAM-0/PRF-1 BRIEF - See Flight Support/Academic Schedule. This is the SMA FAM-0. You will be hard-scheduled for the SFAM-0, this class will provide you with what you need to know in addition to some items covered during your SFAM-1 brief. Note: You are expected to be familiar with the TH-57B preflight prior to C4001. It is highly recommended that you contact an IUT who is ahead of you (past C4001) or a HITU instructor pilot, and have that individual take you through a preflight in order to get you up to speed before you start your C4000-C4100.
  3. Miscellaneous events:
    1. In-brief with the Commodore. This brief is offered on the 3rd day of FITC. Prior to attending the 3rd day all IUTs are required to read the FAA Instructors Aviation handbook chapters 1-8 and is mandatory for all IUTs.
    2. Flight Instructor Training Course (FITC). This is a 3-day course held at NAS Pensacola. It is mandatory for all instructors and you will be scheduled for the course by the HITU clerk. If you know you are going to have a request for leave during your time in the HITU, make sure that you let the HITU clerk know as soon as possible in order to ensure that you complete FITC while at the HITU.
    3. Crew Resource Management. Plan on attending Instructor CRM and Instructor Facilitator Refresher. Instructor CRM fulfills the initial CRM requirements for the TH-57 and should be completed prior to flying your C4001. (See Flight Support/Academic Schedule)
  4. Cockpit Procedure Trainers (3 events) (C2001-C2003)
  5. Contacts (7 events) (C4001-C4290) Note: You are responsible for both B and C systems knowledge throughout the Contact Stage.
    1. Come to the briefs prepared. Know the required FTI, RWOP and NATOPS information for the flight. Be prepared to draw the systems on the board during the briefs.
    2. You must complete a NATOPS open book test, a NATOPS closed book test, and a Course Rules test prior to the C4290 brief. The HITU clerk administers all tests. It is recommended that you start working on these early (about C4003 or C4004) in order to avoid having to do them all the day prior to the C4290.
    3. You will need to total up your total flight hours and TH-57 B/C flight hours for your NATOPS check paperwork prior to the C4290 brief. You will need to provide this information to the instructor you are scheduled with for C4290.
    4. You must have completed the BIFP and EPFP ICWs prior to beginning I3001, so you will need to do this during the Contact stage.
  6. BIs (4 events: 2 simulators/2 aircraft flights) (I3001, I3002, I4001, I4101)
    1. Since you will be working with the GPS when you begin BIs, it is required that you complete the GPS ICW, and spend some time familiarizing yourself with the GPS early in BIs. There are some GPS units available for students and IUTs to practice on in the Learning Center.
    2. You will need to complete both the Instrument Refresher Ground School (that includes your annual exam), and the INAV lecture/EXAM prior to the I4390 brief. Do not attend the INAV/Met Review Class because you will receive your meteorology refresher during the Instrument Refresher Ground School. (See the Flight Support/Academic Schedule). Plan on attending these classes soon after you complete the C4290 but within 60 days of the I4390.
    3. Prior to beginning RI sims, you must have completed the RIFP ICW, so you will need to do this during the BI stage.
    4. After I4001, you should plan to attend the first VFR Nav lecture available. (See the Flight Support/Academic Schedule).
  7. RIs (12 events: 6 simulators(5 I3200 and 1 EP I3101)/6 aircraft flights (5 RIs and 1 N201))
    1. As stated above, you must have completed Instrument Refresher Ground School (with exam), and the INAV class (with exam(see below)) and the appropriate Instrument Stage Exam prior to the I4390 brief. Both are open book exams and are administered by the HITU clerk. In addition, you are required to fill out a NATOPS Instrument Rating Request Form (OPNAV 3710/2) with your approaches, instrument time, etc. and give it to your instructor for I4390 at the brief.
    2. Plan on completing the TFP2 ICW/Lecture, and N0301 lecture by early/mid RIs. This provides for scheduling flexibility during the RI syllabus.
  8. C4400s (2 events) and NAVs (3 events)
    1. Prior to N4001, ensure that TFP2 ICW/Lecture, MITAC Lecture, and N0101/0102 have been completed/attended.
  9. Advanced Instructor Pilot Flight events: C4501, C4601, I4401, I4501, I4601, I4701, N4301 and the Defensive Posturing SIM can be completed in any order.
    1. G1101 (Standardization Officer Debrief) shall be conducted with the HITU Standardization Officer prior to conducting the Instructor Pilots syllabus events.
