CDR Guy K. Carlsward

A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Commander Guy Carlsward received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in May 2005. Immediately after graduation, he reported to NAS Pensacola, FL, where he began flight training. He completed Naval Flight Officer (NFO) training at VT-4 and reported to VP-30 for initial P-3C Orion training, earning his "Wings of Gold" in September 2006.

CDR Carlsward reported to the VP-8 Fighting Tigers, NAS Brunswick, ME in April 2007. There, CDR Carlsward served as the Communications Officer, Command Security Manager, and the Operations Assistant Officer and Operations Division Officer. He deployed to FIFTH Fleet in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

In May 2010, he reported to Commander, Task Force SEVEN TWO (CTF-72), Misawa, Japan, where he served as the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance (MPR) Southeast Asia Officer and CTF-72 lead planner for the Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training exercise enhancing regional cooperation; building friendships, and strengthening professional skills for the countries assigned to him. He also served as the Deputy Future Operations Planner for MPR operations around the SEVENTH Fleet area of responsibility.

CDR Carlsward reported to the USS NIMITZ, NS Everett, WA in February 2013, where he served as an Aircraft Launch and Recovery Officer and was assigned as a Repair Locker Officer, the V-2 Training Officer, and the V-3 Division Officer. During his tour, he completed a deployment to the FIFTH, SIXTH, and SEVENTH Fleet areas of responsibility supporting numerous operations.

In March 2015, CDR Carlsward reported to the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA where he earned a Master of Science in Engineering Acoustics while studying in the Undersea Warfare program. Selected for Aviation Department Head, he then reported to the VP-1 Screaming Eagles in July 2017 where he served as the Command Services Officer, Administrative Officer, and Maintenance Officer. During this tour, he deployed to the FIFTH and SEVENTH Fleet areas of Responsibility and was assigned as an Officer-in-Charge for various detachments to Hawaii, Japan, and Guam. Additionally, CDR Carlsward transitioned from the P-3C Orion to the P-8A Poseidon during this tour of duty.

In November 2019, CDR Carlsward reported to Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group, Norfolk, VA serving briefly as the Assistant Operations Officer before taking over as the Flag Secretary to Rear Admiral Lance Scott.

CDR Carlsward's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
