Welcome to Training Squadron (VT) 22

Home of the VT-22 Golden Eagles

Training Squadron TWENTY-TWO (VT-22), based at Naval Air Station Kingsville, TX, was founded June 13, 1949 as ATU-6. We conduct modern day Intermediate and Advanced flight training for Navy and Marine Corps Student Military Aviators (SMA) in the T-45C Goshawk. We employ a rigorous program to develop young officers into competent and capable Naval Aviators. At the completion of their training, they will receive their coveted Wings of Gold and depart to fly the most advanced aircraft the Navy and Marine Corps have to offer.

The instructor pilots assigned to VT-22 are Navy and Marine Corps Naval Aviators from various backgrounds. They bring invaluable knowledge and experience attained through years of service in fleet squadrons to impart upon our students, their future replacements. Their job is to mentor and train the SMAs through various phases of flight training to include: basic instruments, aircraft familiarization, formation flying, carrier qualification, and basic fighter maneuvering.

Our SMAs arrive with only rudimentary aviation experience. It is up to them to rise to the challenge and devote the time and effort required to successfully complete the arduous syllabus, culminating in the greatly anticipated final flight and earn their Wings of Gold. This is a monumental achievement which requires extreme levels of dedication, persistence, and teamwork. Upon completion of the syllabus, they will transition to either the F-35B/C Lightning II, F/A-18C/D Hornet, F/A-18/E/F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, AV-8B Harrier, E-2C/D Hawkeye, or C-2A Greyhound.

Our customers are the Navy and Marine Corps Fleet Replacement Squadrons (FRS) who accept the newly winged aviators and continue their flight training, ultimately preparing them for combat operations. The pilots trained here go on to form the next generation of warriors and leaders in the United States Navy and Marine Corps.

The best pilots in the world are trained at VT-22. Please like and follow our Facebook page for the most up to date information.
