The Flight Line Office is located in Building 83, room 113.

The Flight Line Office is not equipped to handle any medical examinations. If you are sick or need to be seen by a flight surgeon for a medical issue, please come to sick call or contact flight medicine at (361) 961-3410.

If you have questions, concerns or administrative paperwork (airsickness, IPC/FPC, high flight time waivers), we'll be happy to help.

Our Mission

The mission of Flight Medicine is very clear. We exist to provide you with timely, convenient, quality medical care. We take pride in keeping you healthy and will strive to keep you flying. If you have any illness, medical problems, or questions, contact us today at (361) 961-3410. In order to meet the needs of the aviation community, each Squadron is assigned their own flight surgeon. This flight surgeon will act as your advocate for medical readiness and wellness.

In keeping with our mission there is a flight surgeon on call 24 hours a day and 7 days a week to manage your medical needs. This duty flight surgeon can be reached by calling Flight Medicine at (361) 961-3410 or after hours by calling the hospital front desk at (361) 961-2688.

Health Maintenance

During your training we strongly recommend against high risk activities such as surfing, kite surfing, hockey, basketball, football, boxing, karate and other contact sports. Injury may delay and possibly discontinue your flight training altogether. In addition you'll need approval from your ground safety officer to participate in these activities.

Safety equipment should be worn at work and play! This includes helmets, seat belts, glasses, hearing protection, condoms, safety boots, gloves, and sun block. If there is safety equipment available, use it! EARPLUGS are mandatory in the Training Wing and prevent hearing loss. Every student and instructor pilot must wear these while on the flight line and flying. They're available in the Aircraft Issue Office as well as the squadron spaces.

Exercise must be a part of your daily schedule. Regular exercise improves stamina, improves mental health, and improves the quality of your sleep. It also helps with concentration. We recommend aerobic exercise for a minimum of 20-30 minutes at least 3 times per week. Strength training is also recommended, but don't neglect the abdomen and legs. Start making exercise a priority today.

It is crucial that you get 7-8 hours of restful sleep every night in order to maximize your performance. Click here for sleep recommendations.

It is also imperative that you maintain a healthy diet which is compatible with aviation duties. Click here for diet recommendations.

Some of you will feel overwhelmed with the intense pace of training. It is vital that you learn to cope with stress and take actions to prevent it. If you feel like stress is having an impact on your performance, talk with a Flight Surgeon or click here for stress management tips.

The hospital has many educational resources available which you are encouraged to take advantage of while here. Topics such as stress management, tobacco cessation, high blood pressure prevention, back school, and nutrition education are offered by the Hospital's Wellness Center. Talk to your Flight Surgeon or call (361) 961-3914 if interested.

Services

The administrative check-in time for all Student Aviators reporting onboard NAS Corpus Christi is at 1300 every Wednesday in the Flight Medicine Clinic, First Floor, Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi. Winged aviators should check-in with Flight Medicine by making an appointment for an administrative (check-in) upchit.

All check-ins are required to see a Flight Surgeon.

Annual Physical Examinations are required for all military aviators. After your exam you will receive an up-chit until your next birth month. Flight physicals should be scheduled through your squadron's NATOPS office. If it is your birth month and you have not been scheduled for a physical, please contact your squadron NATOPS, then flight medicine. Your up-chit will expire on the last day of your birth month.

On the morning of your scheduled physical exam, report to Flight Medicine at 0715 (0745 on Tuesdays). Most exams are short forms, but if you are getting a long form or periodic physical exam, you must fast for 12 hours prior to the appointment. Long forms are done every 5 years at ages 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and annually thereafter.

Sick call is every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning at 0730 and Tuesday mornings at 0800. If you are sick or need an upchit, please come to Flight Medicine Clinic located on the first floor of Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi during sick call hours. Sick call patients are seen on a first come, first serve basis. Patients arriving to sick call after 0930 cannot be guaranteed a same-day appointment.

Appointments for long term issues, retirement physicals, and SERE physicals can be made by calling (361) 961-3410.

If you have an emergency, call "911" or report to the nearest civilian emergency room. If you are unsure whether you should go to the emergency room, call the duty flight surgeon at (361) 961-2688. The closest civilian emergency room from NASCC is Bay Area Hospital located at South Padre Island Drive and Rodd Field Road (see map below) or Spohn South ER located on Saratoga between Cimmaron and Staples. In the event that you are seen at a civilian emergency room, it is crucial to see a flight surgeon on the next business day or as soon as possible.

You should make every effort to contact a flight surgeon prior to going to an emergency room.
