Flight School

Four Phases

Naval Flight School consists of four phases: Aviation Pre-flight Indoctrination, Primary Flight Training, Intermediate Flight Training, and Advanced Flight Training. After completion of Advanced Flight Training, the Student Naval Aviator (SNA) receives their Wings Of Gold.

1 - Aviation Pre-flight Indoctrination (API)

API is the introduction of flight basics to the SNA. Students are in classes such as introduction to basic aerodynamics, aviation weather, air navigation, flight rules and regulations, and aircraft engines and systems. The SNA is also exposed to aviation physiology through classes with the Naval Operational Medical Institute, learning about how flight affects the human body.

2 - Primary Flight Training

Primary teaches the SNA the basics of flying. For Navy and Marine Corps SNAs, there are two choices for Primary. The Navy offers training at either Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Pensacola, Florida, or Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi, Texas. All Naval Air Stations use the T-6B Texan II to train for Primary. The SNA learns visual flight, basic instrument flying, introduction to aerobatics, radio instrument navigation, formation flying, and conducts several solo flights. All Flight Students go through the same curriculum for Primary. At the end of Primary, the SNA chooses the type of aircraft they would like to fly.

There are 5 pipeline choices: Jet, E2/C2, Maritime, Helicopter, and E-6 TACAMO.

3 - Intermediate Flight Training

Intermediate Flight Training is different for each of the 5 platforms that you can choose upon completion of Primary Training. You will learn more about navigation and air traffic control by flying to other training bases. Intermediate training for the single seat aircraft such as the jet platforms will focus on individual skills, while the multi-seat platforms such as maritime propellers, helicopters, and E2/C2 will focus on crew coordination.
